Dragon Ball Fans Angry Over Female Characters Relegated to Housewife Roles

Fan outrage over Akira Toriyama’s domestic abuse of his female characters is the reason for the latest Dragon Ball Super chapter.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is one of the most popular anime/manga franchises. However, his latest chapter has attracted the ire of fans who don’t like the treatment of female characters.

Dragon Ball Super’s newest manga chapter has been met with backlash from fans on Twitter due to concerns about Mai’s development. Young Trunks were reassured by Pilaf Gang members that they can go out on dates as often as they want as their relationship develops. Fans have been concerned about her future as the characters are portrayed together. There is growing concern that she may lose her complex and multilayered growth and become a housewife like many other female Dragon Ball characters.

Dragon Ball’s Housewife Trope

Many criticized Toriyama’s past of placing female characters in the role of housewives. Videl Bulma, Chi-Chi, and Bulma were all victims of this. Their strong characterizations became often eclipsed by their spouses. One Twitter user expressed concern about the fate of female characters and called out Kale, Caulifa, and Caulifa to be potential victims of the housewife curse.

As the story progresses, Mai’s future is uncertain. Many readers have grown tired of the repetitious trope due to frustration at the number of characters who are relegated to housewife roles. Fans hope for a new chapter via Viz Media on March 19.

Dragon Ball was first serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, in 1984. It continued to be serialized until 1995. The anime series inspired many sequels and spinoffs. There are also multiple anime shows, such as Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Super. The original story tells the tale of Son Goku, a young warrior who falls to Earth in a Saiyan Pod. He is on a quest to become a better fighter and discover the Dragon Balls. The series has grown to include a wide range of characters. The latest Dragon Ball Super manga chapters are about Trunks (and Goten) in their teenage years. They attend high school, take on superhero roles, and Trunks attempts to get Mai on a date.

The animated adaptation of Dragon Ball Super will return in 2023. There are 131 episodes already available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The English dub for the Toriko x One Piece Dragon Ball Z crossover will be available on Toonami starting March 4, 2023.
