Ian McShane Talks about Missing Action Scenes in John Wick 4, and How They Could Have Changed the Movie

John Wick: Chapter 4’s Ian McShane jokes about how fight scenes starring Winston were removed from the final film.

John Wick Chapter 4star Ian McShane recently said that he was filming action scenes for the action-thriller sequel, only for them to wind up on the floor of the cutting room.

McShane has spoken out about the fake deleted scenes starring Winston Scott during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. He said, “They did provide me with a few action scenes but they cut them out because they were [expletive”. They were. McThai, an ancient form of martial art, is what I was able to study. It’s an ancient Scottish form of martial arts in that you wear a kilt and run at them. I ran into Donnie Yen, my co-star who ran oppositely.

While McShane’s comments were joking, McShane is an English actor who has expressed previously interest in participating in the John Wickfranchise’s elaborately choreographed action set pieces. It could be for a while before getting the chance to do it, however, the director Chad Stahelski recently suggested that he and star Keanu Reeves have no intention of being in any rush to begin working on John Wick: Chapter 5. Keanu Reeves and I are done in our heads for the moment. Stahelski said that John Wick will be given the chance to take a break. “I’m certain that the studio has a plan [for John Wick: Chapter 5]. If everyone loves it and it goes kooky, we’ll have a peaceful minute.”

Critics Love John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick is indeed having the time off. The franchise is still doing it in style. Early reviews of John Wick Chapter 2 were mostly positive. Reviewers were unanimous in their assessment of the sequel as “bigger, worse, bolder and more lasting” in comparison to the first sequels. Many reviews focused on the film’s fast pacing and entertainment value (especially regarding the numerous fight scenes). Reeves also garnered kudos, as did franchise newbies Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgard, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, and Rina Sawayama.

John Wick: Chapter 4‘s commercial performance is anticipated to be similar to its critical success, too. Analysts are predicting that the fourth installment in the action-thriller franchise will earn between $60-70 million at the domestic box office over its opening weekend. John Wick Chapter 4 will beat the Parabellum franchise record of $60-70 million if this is true. That film posted $56.8 million in ticket sales over its opening weekend, before going on to gross $171 million in North America and over $328 million globally which makes it John Wick’s most profitable outing to date.

John Wick Chapter 4 arrives in cinemas on March 24, 2023.
