Chainsaw Man’s First Steps

Tatsuki Fujimoto’s recurring Chainsaw Man manga first was published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2018 and moved to Shonen Jump+ in 2020, where it continues its serialization. The story is about Denji an impoverished man who is forced to take on dangerous and deadly tasks to repay his father’s debt. After his mafia bosses deceive him and leave the man, Denji is recruited by an unsavory group. He makes use of his power to turn his head and limbs into chainsaws to hunt down and kill creatures.

Although it only came out recently, Chainsaw Man already stands as the top-selling manga of all time, along with classics such as Hiro Mashima’s Rave Master and Clamp’s Cardcaptor Sakura. The manga also landed the top place in the New York Times Bestsellers List many times and was awarded many awards, including Best Shonen Manga in the Shogakukan Manga Awards 2021 and Best Manga in the Harvey Awards 2021 and 2020.

The story’s anime adaptation produced by studio MAPPA ( Attack on Titan The Final Season) first was aired from October 2022 to December 2022. At the time of writing, it’s not clear if the show will be renewed for a second season, as its home video release has not been as successful. Chainsaw Man stars Kikunosuke Toya as Denji, Mariya Ise (Fairy Tail) as Himeno, Shogo Sakata (Fire Force) as Aki, and Tomori Kusunoki (The Misfit at Demon King Academy) as Makima.

Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Manmanga is distributed in North America by VIZ Media, and MAPPA’s anime series is available to stream through Crunchyroll as well as Hulu.
